Figured this should go into another thread. I'm with you when it comes to defending them and giving up. People just don't want to hear it. The point is if you were as old as we all respectively were when we saw the first Star Wars but instead saw episodes 1-3 you would still think its totally bad ass. Hell when you look at Return of the Jedi it feels just like 1-3... and I remember thinking how awesome that movie was regardless. I guess the point is you shouldn't get either of us started on this. :)

Before the prequels were a reality, I remember that every Star Wars fan I knew had written their own storyline regarding the prequels and post-quels (is that even a term?). I'd heard so many theories and ideas on the subject. I think that once you do something like that, it becomes canon in your mind and it's very difficult to watch something different. I was shocked at the outrage people felt. Most were very disappointed. I took the bad reviews as expected considering the subject matter. Most critics dislike sci-fi and fantasy but the truly disgruntle were the fans. I guess the prequels suffered from the amount of hype. If these were films not associated with Star Wars, I think they would have had a different reception.

I don't want to make excuses. I was disappointed with the storyline and acting. I blame that on direction. George should have hired a screenwriter and director for the project. His talents lie in production. The visuals, costumes, sets, etc. are all par excellence. Imagine a Star Wars film directed by Tarantino, del Toro, Nolan, or Fincher or even Kevin Smith! One of the best lines in Star Wars is despised by George: Han Solo's "I know" response to Leia's "I love you".

So now it's started :)

Its as if we're of the same mind. I agree with you 100% on Lucas being an amazing producer. He has what it takes to do the business back end... hence his fortunes. The creative side should have been left to others.

My imagination always runs wild when you mention those other directors. I have a feeling that the TV shows will be interesting as well.
